What is the safest way to submit a security deposit for an apartment in a foreign country?
My husband and I are renting an apartment for short term in france. We need to submit a security deposit – a check that won’t be cashed unless we don’t show up, or wreck the place during our stay.
What is the safest way to do this? Should we just send a personal check or what? We’ve done our homework on the people, but I am still hesitant since it’s a foreign country. How can we prevent the check from just being cashed and them running with our money?

Short answer, you can’t. If you don’t trust them, don’t rent from them. I guess that you could set up some kind of escrow in France but this would be difficult and probably expensive.

You can not protect yourself. The only way would be to “escrow” the money. You deposit it with someone you absolutely know and trust. That person or business checks out the owner to verify their personal ID that proves that they own the house and have the right to rent it out.
If you don’t have anyone who can do that, you are at risk of losing all your money. Usually there is no one you can trust except yourselves. You go in person and get proof of ownership and proof that the place is ready to rent. Then you hand over the money.
