How do I get on short term disability when I am not an employee at my job?
I have been working at my job for a year and a couple months. I am a contractor, meaning I am not an actual employee and do not have as many benefits. In a month and a half I will be having a total hip replacement and will not be able to work for about 5-8 weeks.
I just got my first apartment and I want to be able to still pay my rent.
How can I get on disability?

You can apply to your state.

Since you don’t have that benefit, there isn’t much you can do other than apply for public assistance. Good luck.

As a contractor, you are self-employed. You are your own employer. This is precisely how companies get out of paying benefits to the people who do their work and you are discovering the downside to such an arrangement.
I suppose the only “disability” arrangement that you could even hope to get on would be Social Security Disability but it would probably take so long to get approved (if they even approved it) that you would be recovered and all this would be behind you and you’d be back on your feet. If it’s just a couple of months rent that you’re worried about, see if you can borrow that amount. Or take on a housemate to share expenses.
