Can a landlord charge an extra fee for a “short-term” rental?
I was desperate to find an apartment and ended up signing a lease in California that had a clause stating that I would have to pay an additional $1100 in rent if I left before 15 months. Is such a clause legally enforceable? The basic lease calls for a month-to-month tenancy.

yes it’s legal, but that’s crazy that you signed that. it’s a month to month, but you pay an extra $1,110 if you leave in less than 15 months? Boy, he pulled a big one over on you. He gets extra $$$ if you leave plus it’s a month to month so you can boot you out at any time if he wants. He’s slick…very slick. Sorry, you signed it.
