Laine S – That’s not a lot of money , but a lot for you , right ?
These are options I’d recommend you think about :
1. Contact a “sister” university in NY – most have a department to assist with lodging for temporary. Even if you are not visiting a uni , they may help or give you clues – this is usually the cheapest as their students and visitors are often faced with it.
2. Filter options on by price and location after you have put your dates in – often there are deals in hostels and apartments – but the apartments might be a bit pricey for you. This site has last minute deals and compares 100′s of places.
3. Try which searches over 35 sites concurrently for the best deal.
4. Last resort use a recognised hostel to save money or ne of those house exchange websites.
Where you stay is important so use the maps.
Not sure if this is helpful , but good luck
